The Vesterålen Islands in Northern Norway
So I finally arrived in Sortland, having traversed the thin and long country of Norway from its South to the very North in Vesterålen. The cottage was owned by Mr Kjell, a retired colonel from the Norwegian army. A still well-built man maybe in his eighties and retired decades ago, I was impressed by his amazing fitness and cheerful persona, especially the alertness of his steely blue eyes. He had driven his SUV more than a 100km to pick me up. I soon learned that he, along with his wife (also retired years ago as a dental assistant), used to regularly go fishing in the lakes, do hiking trips in the mountains, hunting in the forests, and lived on a farm with animals. I seemed so impressed by this super-fit old couple. Their children and grandchildren were living away in bigger cities across Norway.On the day of my arrival, the quaint old couple welcomed me at the cottage with a delicious warm dinner of moose meat as we chatted over coffee about scenic places and interesting…
